The Beginnings

How did the support/education group, known as Lowcountry Huntington's Disease Group get started?

During the fall of 2002, Sandra Freyermuth began to meet occasionally with the wife of her husband's distant cousin to share experiences as their husbands had inherited Huntington's Disease.
It wasn’t long before the idea of a group was born to provide support and education to others. From the very beginning, the small group had big ambitions. They wanted to provide opportunities for families affected by HD to get together, share experiences, socialize, and learn about resources in the community as well as progress being made in HD research. These women realized the need to emphasize education for themselves, the community, and local health care professionals.
The first official meeting was held in May of 2003 with fifteen people in attendance at Candler Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. The guest facilitator was Taylor Butler, LCSW, from Emory University’s HDSA Center of Excellence and Wesley Woods Health Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
